Hi readers!

Today I’ll talk about my favourite books. Those books that is worth to buy them, and have them well exposed on the shelves of our bedroom. Those magical books that makes you don’t realize that you actually are reading a book. Those that makes you enter in the body of the person who they’re talking about.

In this post series I’ll recommend you the books that I’ve liked the most, altogether with information of them.

“Memorias de Idhún” trilogy

It’s a very large trilogy that mainly tells us the history of three young people in Idhún world: two of them aliens of the world, or this is what it seems… The books of the trilogy are: “La Resistencia”, “Tríada” & “Panteón”. It has 2300 pages (600 for the first, 800 for the second and 1000 for the last one more or less).

The world of Idhún is ruled by six deities: Aldun, Irial, Karevan, Neliam, Wina & Yohavir: The fire god and creator of yans, the light goddess and creator of humans, the mountains god and creator of giants, the water goddes and creator of varus, the nature goddess and creator of fairies, and least but not less the wind and empathy goddess and creator of celestials respectively.

Also, in Idhún, there are three species over the deadly, without reaching at the power of a god. The unicorns: horses with a horn in the head, which can be used to give magic to anyone, but anyone can find them because are they who found his chosen to give them magic. Dragons: big and strong creatures, which rules over all the six races. Sheks: Winged and evil snakes, who’s objective is to conquer the Idhún world.

And all the adventure begins in Earth, when Jack’s parent are killed and he’s “adopted” for 2 strange guys: Shail and Alsan.

Discover the legendary Idhún’s adventure, written by Laura Gallego, in this magnificient trilogy!

This book hasn’t been translated into english yet.

“Crónicas de la Torre” saga

Dana has a friend: Kai. His only friend. And besides, he is imaginary, or this is what it seems. Moreover, Dana has magic, something not very frequent.

One day, a mage comes at Dana’s town and he takes her into his tower of sorcery. There, Dana will learn with Kai to master magic. She’ll also know Fenris, a strange elf with a dark past, and the cooker of the tower: a dwarf who doesn’t like very much magic.

Dana, while she’s studying there, discovers that in the tower there’s an ancient curse related to a wolves that howl at the moon in nights.

Discover you too what’s this curse, and the dark secret of Fenris in this four-book-saga (The Valley of the Wolves, “La Maldición del Maestro”, “La Llamada de los Muertos”, “Fenris el elfo”) written by Laura Gallego!

(Only the first book has been translated into English).

I, Robot

This book, focused into a more adult public and written for the mythical Sci-Fi writer Isaac Asimov, presents us several histories chained by an interview with Susan Calvin, U.S. Robots Psychologist.

Histories are part of the psychologist and turns arround the Three archi-known Laws of Robotics:

  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Histories full of philosophy and psychology that will enchant to all Sci-Fi fans.

Trivia: Liar, a History inside the book, was, according to Oxford English Dictionary, the first recorded use of the word robotics.

The legend of the Wandering King

A great history written by Laura Gallego that tells us the history of an Arabic prince called Walid, who wants to always win the poetry contest.

But he’s always won by a peasant that writes better poems that him. So, for revenge, he decides to nominate the peasant as his real secretary, and he commands him impossible things. Until when he decides to command that he has to weave a carpet that has to contain entire history of mankind.

What will happen if the weaver could accomplish the Prince’s assignment?

The Wii and its accessories

Greetings, readers!

I know that I’m talking about a topic that has been released a month or two ago, but until a little time ago, I haven’t had the honour to test it.

I’m talking about Wii Motion Plus: an acessory for Wii that improves notably it’s playability.

Nintendo showed us their great set full of gameplay by end of 2006 and, as a faithful follower I am of them, I bought the same day it came out. Yes, you may say that is has not good graphics, but gameplay is a pretty good feeling, and as they say: “We do not intend to compete with the the other consoles (PS3 and Xbox360), because the market that we adress is not the same.”

mando en 2D. Por ejemplo, como si se tratara de un volante de un juego de carreras.

However, although the gameplay that the WiiMote brought was enough, did not have a motion accuracy like “I move here, the character moves here”, but it was something like predefined movements implementing actions to the character: like pressed buttons but by moving the mote in a certain way. Although a better accuracy was achieved by moving the mote in 2D, for example, as if it were a wheel of a racing game.

Nintendo and other companies, launched many accessories for the mote, such as a remote control for driving games or a gun to the shooters. Still, they only acted as supports for the WiiMote to give a better sense of immersion, such as the driving wheel.

Relatively recently, the Japanesse company decided to launch another product with good gameplay: the Wii Fit.This is a dual balance that can measure precisely the weight applied on each side, and in this way have different applications in games where it is used: For example, a ski and snowboarding game where you can control the snow leaning on Wii Fit. We can also use as part of the drums in the Wii Music, and even exercising with it every day with the game included with the peripheral, or with the recently released “Wii Fit plus“.

And now they have launched the Wii Motion Plus.

The Wii Motion Plus is simply adding another sensor under the WiiMote, capable of a very great sensitive that, with the top sensor, detect movements with impeccable precision: it can capture all the movements you make with, and, if the game allows, bring them to the screen with tremendous accuracy. This feature provides a maximum level of gameplay, as the feeling that YOU are controling the character. t is, in short, what should have been the WiiMote from the beginning. And with it, is included Wii Sports Resort, a game where you can practice different sports on an island: from fencing to parachuting, aerial combat or a peaceful golf.

My heartfelt congratulations to the company of Kyoto, because the gameplay featuring their console is very good:

Greetings!

Logic puzzles

Well, I don’t addict this computer things, so I’m going to contribute with my part. And, how the title says, today I’m telling you some riddles:

The berber will

A berber from the desert has three sons with different ages, and some camels. But, at his time, he passes away and leaves in his will an enigmatic statement. For distributing his 17 camels between his three sons, he puts two conditions:

  • The first is the way the camels have to be distributed. The older son has to receive the half part of the total, the middle son must receive the third part and, the younger son, the ninth part.

Apparently, this is not a problem, because 17/2 = 8.5 camels, so if we kill a camel and divide it in halves, we could distribute correctly, but…

  • The second condition says that they can’t kill, give, or do anything with the camels, so at the end of the distribution the total of camels has to be 17.

The sons, unable to solve this hard puzzle, decide to visit the town’s wise, and they ask him the solution.

How can we solve this problem?

The café

There’s a new café in town, and three friends arrange to go there and have a coffee, to see how good is it. They ask for 3 cups of coffee, and the waiter show them the bill. They have to pay 15 cents (The café was new, so there was low costs). When the waiter is going to put the money in the cash desk, the café’s owner tells him to pay back 5 cents to the customers, since they have been the first customers of the café. The waiter thought that it would be impossible to distribute 5 cents between three people, so he kept 2 cents and gave 3 cents to the friends. When the waiter gave them the money they kept 1 cent each one, and they go to their respective jobs, very happy with the services and the decoration of the café. But…

If they get back a cent, it’s like if they had paid 4 cents for each cup of coffee (remember that initially they worthed 5 cents, but each friend got back a cent). If we do a quick operation:

4 cent x 3 cups of coffee = 12 cents

12 cents + 2 cents (from the waiter) = 14 cents

¿Where’s the missing cent?

The mythical Einstein’s riddle

In a street there are five houses, painted five different colours. In each house lives a person of different nationality. These five homeowners each drink a different kind of beverage, smoke different brand of cigar and keep a different pet.

We have the following hints:

  • The Brit lives in a red house.
  • The Swede keeps dogs as pets.
  • The Dane drinks tea.
  • The Green house is next to, and on the left of the White house.
  • The owner of the Green house drinks coffee.
  • The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds.
  • The owner of the Yellow house smokes Dunhill.
  • The man living in the centre house drinks milk.
  • The Norwegian lives in the first house.
  • The man who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats.
  • The man who keeps horses lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill.
  • The man who smokes Blue Master drinks beer.
  • The German smokes Prince.
  • The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.
  • The man who smokes Blends has a neighbour who drinks water.

¿Who’s the goldfish owner?

Sum… the letters?

Each letter has a numeric value (from 0 to 9). You have to guess them.

The words are in Spanish. It doesn’t really matter, but its translation is “six of january = kings“. In January 6th, in Spain it’s the Magi Kings‘ day.

The 3 bulbs

We have in front of us a two floor building. In the bottom floor, we have three switches: (A ; B ; C) and stairs that lead us to the top floor, in which there are three bulbs (1 ; 2 ; 3).

You, dear reader, as a good electrician, have to know which switch sets on which light bulb in an exact way and without theories. The difficulty is that you can only climb the stairs one time.

Notice that there is no cheating, no windows, there is no possibility of seeing the bulbs nor the light without climbing upstairs.

Example: I switch on A switch. When I go up in the top floor, I see that second lightbulb is open, so I can say that switch A lights bulb 2, but I can’t say what switch lights bulb 1, for example. So this is the reasoning to follow.

Good luck and see you the next day!
